Beginning Essentials in Early Childhood Education: Create, Explore, Learn!

This two-day interactive workshop will introduce participants to the development of best practices in an early childhood setting. Educators will be provided with a variety of strategies to help build a successful classroom community and ways to implement positive instructional strategies. This workshop will provide a better understanding of developmentally appropriate practices as it pertains to the classroom environment, child development, curriculum planning and small group instruction. Participants will engage in theme based center time activities where they will gain knowledge of how to modify lessons to meet the needs of all children.

Developmentally Appropriate Practice

This workshop will help participants gain insight into Developmentally Appropriate Practice as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The workshop with describe the principles of developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood programs and the significance of fostering a child’s social/emotional, physical and cognitive development. The roles and responsibilities of early childhood professionals will be examined for establishing and promoting standards of high quality practice. The workshop meets one of the new DOH requirements, “Child’s Development.”

Making the Most out of Center Time

Through lecture, hands-on activities, participation in centers and a make-and-take, participants will be able to set up their classroom centers & provide the students with theme based/content based activities. Participants will take part in writing lesson plans, which they will be able to take back to their classrooms and implement. This workshop meets one of the new DOH requirements, “Curriculum”.

More than Just a Number: Taking Math out of the Math Center

Often teachers have math activities embedded in one area of the classroom - the math center. This workshop will provide an introduction to the integrated curriculum model as it relates to math in an early childhood setting. Participants will become familiar with strategies and techniques to integrate math concepts throughout various content areas. Participants will learn to use graphing, stages of block play, literacy and everyday objects to tie in State Learning Standards with developmentally-appropriate activities.

Shared Reading: Linking Spoken Language into Written Word

Shared Reading is a great strategy to encourage early reading enjoyment and success with a high level of teacher support. During this workshop participants will learn how to make the story “come alive”. They will learn how to actively engage students before, during and after a story, incorporating voice modulation and the use of props. Participants will be provided with literacy based activities that will capture their student’s interest, as well as, ways to integrate these concepts throughout various curriculum areas. ASHA CEU’s.

Wonder, Discovery and Exploration: Welcome to the World of Science!

This workshop provides opportunities for teachers to become familiar with science exploration and discovery in an early childhood setting. Participants will become familiar with strategies and techniques on how to create a classroom full of wonder by integrating science concepts throughout the various content areas.

Through discussion and hands-on inquiry based activities, the participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to encourage young learners to be inquisitive, creative and observant about the science found in their everyday world. This session will include cooking, scavenger hunts, ScMath (Science and Math integration) and science discovery in the Dramatic play area.

Word Walls: Using the Classroom Wall Space to Support Literacy Learning

When children point out a favorite restaurant or pick out their favorite box of cereal, they are reading! During Part One of this workshop participants will learn about the natural way to help children make print connections, “Environmental Print”. During Part Two, participants will learn about the valuable literacy tool that student’s reference for reading and writing, “Word Walls”. This workshop will provide participants with activities that will capture their student’s interest, as well as, learn how to integrate these concepts throughout the various content areas.
